Will The Filipino Ever Be United?
The American people learned from the experiences of their revolution which eventually formed the United States. (So did other nations). From the ashes and deaths of this conflict, and learning from the pain of the experience, they rose and built their nation to what it is today. The Philippines has never been through any similar conflict. What we have been through were wars against foreign aggressors like the Spaniards, the Americans, and the Japanese. But the lessons learned from these conflicts were all short lived because we still failed to form that kind of bond that would really unify the people and its aspirations. The supposed to be People Power Revolution was not really a revolution. It was an uprising against a dictator. After achieving the goal, the essence of People Power fizzled out only to be used later on as a political tool to unseat any unpopular leader. This is perhaps why the Filipino people in general appear to be aimless - the lack of political will is so evident. From its leaders and to its lawmakers. Except for birth right there is nothing else that bonds and unifies its people.
